What happens when two whiskey enthusiasts from Clemmons, a craft distiller from Greensboro, and a Winston-Salem brewery known for its popular bourbon barrel aged imperial stout decide to create a kick-ass collaboration? Keep reading to find out!
Rickhouse Ramblings, in collaboration with Fainting Goat Distillery and Foothills Brewing, is thrilled to announce the upcoming release of Fainting Goat Fisher’s Straight Rye Whiskey Finished in Foothills’ Bourbon Barrel Aged Sexual Chocolate Imperial Stout Barrels. Or, as we like to call it, Ménage à Trois.
In August 2023, Mike and Christian of Rickhouse Ramblings tasted through eight different barrels of Fainting Goat Straight Rye Whiskey before selecting barrels #164 and #165. Each had been aged approximately five years in new American oak barrels. Andrew Norman, Head Distiller at Fainting Goat, emptied the selected barrels and double oaked the whiskey in 2023 vintage Foothills Brewing Bourbon Barrel Aged Sexual Chocolate barrels. After approximately one year, time had worked its magic, and the decision was made to officially pull the barrels for bottling.
What was created is something that we are very excited to share with you all!
Our 1st selection, Barrel 164, is reminiscent of cool autumn evenings and the Halloween candy “Whoppers”. This rich and aromatic whiskey produces hints of raspberry, tobacco, cocoa covered malt, and just a touch of floral honeysuckle. Sipping a glass of this whiskey brings forth notes of fresh honey-crisp apple slices, traditional rye spices, toasted brown sugar, tobacco, and nutty hazelnut. In the finish, a dryness from the stout is present with vanilla and aromatic cloves standing strong. A punch of rye spice builds in the back of the throat leaving a long steady cinder throughout your chest.
Our 2nd selection, Barrel 165, provides a completely different and decadent experience, creamy and robust, earning the nickname “Chocolate Lava Cake”. Taking in the aromatics of this whiskey quickly, one will detect sweet chocolate brownie batter and a slight hint of bananas foster sauce. On your palate, this whiskey is creamy and sweet, leading with notes of charred oak barrel, dark berries, and cocoa powder. This whiskey truly provides a perfect harmony of both traditional rye whiskey and chocolate stout flavors. Barrel 165 rounds out with a medium finish that brings along copious amounts of rich tobacco.
